Sigma Delta Pi Honor Society in Spanish
Omicron Zeta Chapter at UTSA
Sigma Delta Pi, a national honor society in Spanish, accepts applications from potential members each fall and spring. Members are currently enrolled students who are inducted during a semester in which they are registered and meet other qualifications as described below. The organization honors those who demonstrate a love of Hispanic studies and outstanding academic achievement in that field.
Membership is open to juniors and seniors having a 3.00 grade point average or better in Spanish classes and who have taken at least six upper division hours of literature, culture, or linguistics in Spanish. They must also have a 2.75 or better overall grade point average. Further, membership is open to graduate students who have a 3.00 grade point average or better and who either meet the criteria above or who have completed six hours of graduate study in Spanish successfully.
If you meet these qualifications, we hope that you will apply and join us for the initiation ceremony to be held in the current semester, normally in November or April. In addition to the initiation and reception, the group sometimes decides to participate in general university activities (Fiesta UTSA, special lectures, walkathons, etc.) and/or special events in Hispanic culture in the community. At the April event, there is election of officers.
If you are interested in Sigma Delta Pi and feel that you qualify, please fill out the application and email it to the faculty advisor, Dr. Frank Pino, at Frank.Pino@utsa.edu. You can also leave the form for him at the department office (Modern Languages and Literatures). Please enclose a copy of your current grade record from Banner to verify your qualifications, and be sure that you have included your email on the form so that you can be notified of the date, time and place of the ceremony. You may bring guests to the ceremony, but you must so indicate on the form so that we can plan accordingly. The form and dues ($30) must be submitted two weeks or more before the ceremony, as pins and certificates must be ordered for each candidate a minimum of two weeks ahead of time. Please make any checks out to Sigma Delta Pi. You can also reach Dr. Pino at 458-7340.
We hope to see you as part of Sigma Delta Pi. Membership is an important honor, one that will indicate to you, your friends, your family, your employer(s), and those who consider you for advanced studies that you have significant achievement in Spanish language and culture. It goes without saying that we want to see your honored for these accomplishments during your studies. Please consider us.
